Jack nodded as he listened to something Alina whispered to him as they watched his friend Rolf Torkjelson practice his stallion. He’d met Rolf through Finn who’d done farrier work for Rolf when she’d lived in Maryland. Now Finn was back in Branchwater, married to Dustin Kane, and she did work for him.

Gazing over the top of the young girl sitting between him and the woman who’d given birth to her, Jack noticed the way she watched the man on horseback. He wasn’t jealous, well, not much. It had been two weeks since he’d met Alina and he’d made sure to be at her lessons if he wasn’t competing. He had tickets for them to his next competition but hadn’t given them to her yet, unsure if she would accept.

He was going home in two more weeks and didn’t want his time with them to end. Alina made him laugh and smile. He wanted to spoil her and make sure she wanted for nothing. Then there was Gwen. He longed for her to have that smile on her face all the time, not only certain times.

He reached over and dragged his hand down the side of her face. Gwen looked at him.

“Yes?”

“Have dinner with me tonight.”

“Sorry, I can’t. I have to work.” She gave him a small smile.

“Lunch?”

“Huh?”

Lord, he longed to kiss her lips again. He’d been having wet dreams about them. “Lunch. You know, a meal you eat before dinner?”

She looked at her watch. “Sorry, I have to get her home and get ready to leave.”

“So I drive you and we pick something up on the way. That way you can eat and not be as rushed.” He took her silence in the way he wanted to. “Wonderful, it’s settled then. What would you like to have for lunch, Alina?”

After a quick talk with Rolf once he’d finished, Jack herded them to his truck and opened the back door for Alina before assisting her inside.

“You’re truck is so nice,” she said.

“Thank you. Buckle your belt.”

Then he walked to the passenger door and held it for Gwen. “Up you go, unless you’d like me to lift you as well.”

Her brown eyes darkened and her sharp intake of breath told him she wasn’t as immune to him as she pretended to be. “I’m fine,” she muttered.

Trailing his hand down her lower body, he nodded. “Yes you are.” Closing that door, he got behind the wheel. After getting Alina’s approval, he called ahead to order some food and on the way they picked it up. Listening to Gwen’s directions he got to her apartment complex and parked his truck.

The three of them headed for her place and he stood at the back while she unlocked the door and allowed Alina to enter. Food on the table, he took in her small place. Clean and homey.

“Nice,” he said.

“Sure. I’m sure a man like you is used to small one bedroom apartments.” She slapped a hand over her mouth. “I’m sorry, that was uncalled for.
